Recap: DHD2 & DHD3

Live Music Movement Foundation hosted a series of impromptu, pop-up events this summer at Hoot’s Smokehouse in Magnolia Park. The events were on July 29th, September 9th, and September 30th respectively. This article will focus on the last two events. You can read about the first Down Home Day here.

​There’s no better way to end the summer than having a get-together and when great food and music are in the mix there’s definitely going to be a good time. Upon walking through the doors of Hoot’s Smokehouse for the second Down Home Day (also called DHD2) there was a sense of familiarity. And what I mean by that is, it just felt like home. No pun intended. Sure, there were plenty of new faces, but they were also many familiar ones, all smiling. It was a safe place to settle in and relax.

The music was outstanding thanks to the exceptional musicians affectionately dubbed the Smokehouse All-stars. Leslie Drayton was on the trumpet, Sebastian Morales on the guitar, Marcus Alexander on percussion, Weldon Scott and Dylan Mansfield (a highly talented teen who played DHD3) on the bass, A.J. Moyler on the keyboard, Albert Pagliuso on the conga drums, and Rodney Glover on the saxophone. The tunes ranged from upbeat and satisfying to groovy and invigorating.

While the soulful tunes were playing, platters of smoked wings, ribs, and Hoot’s Smokehouse’s Magnolia Stacker (a king of a sandwich which boasts layers of brisket, sausage, onions and peppers, cheese and a generous portion of dirty rice) made their way to hungry patrons.

In addition to taking in the music and eating the delicious barbecue, guests played dominoes and the crowd favorite, Uno. There was a special shout out to several members of the Armed Forces who were recognized for their service. Some cool LMMF swag was given away as well. The evening was the perfect opportunity to catch up with old friends and make some new ones. DHD3 ended with LMMF’s signature White Napkin Wave, a fun way to participate in the excitement of the evening’s last tune.

​The Down Home Day event series was a success in so many important ways. Jazz, blues, and soul music were presented in a safe, family-friendly environment to an intergenerational audience who enjoyed building community together. Professional musicians played side by side with younger musicians sharing their talents and crafting a great musical experience for all who attended.
