YVETTE COLEMAN & KATHY DRAYTON: PATRONS OF JAZZ |
Thirty years ago on April 12, 1983, at five months old, Chevon LaRis Powell suffered severe burns in an apartment fire that destroyed her family’s dwelling place and all their possessions. She and her parents, Cheryl and Anthony Powell, suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns. Chevon’s burns were so severe that she was given a 50-50 chance of survival. Not only did she survive, she thrived! May 12, the day Chevon was released from the hospital after the fire, is now known as her second birthday and on May 12, 2013 she will celebrate her 30th birthday (her first was celebrated on November 12, 2012). It has become a family tradition to celebrate her blessed recovery and life. This year the celebration will be in the form of a fund raiser to benefit Camp Janus. |
Wow, whoa, hold up, wait a minute – Will Wheaton, Jr. rocked the house Sunday, April 28, 2013, at Maverick’s Flat for Live Music Movement Foundation’s (LMMF) Old School Sunday. Will performed three sets of R&B classics and original cuts from his own CDs. The band was tight and Will’s sexy baritone bass vocals ignited the crowd. It didn’t take long for everyone to get in the mood and on the dance floor. Crowd favorites included “Love and Happiness” and Will’s original composition “Old School Soul” which celebrates every artist and everything we love about soul music.
A Sunday afternoon into evening of Old School Soul with Will Wheaton is fast approaching. The musical event takes place Sunday, April 28, 2013, at the historic Maverick’s Flat in the heart of Leimert Park, 4225 Crenshaw Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90008. Showtime is 5:00 p.m. concluding at 9:00 p.m. Will is an exciting performer as you can see from this photo taken during a live event. He holds nothing back from his performance. If you want to get an idea of what to expect, visit Will’s website to hear his rendition of “Love and Happiness”. Be The Match Foundation and LMMF are partnering during this event to raise awareness of the need for individuals to join the bone marrow registry. We are reaching out to the demographic of 18-44 year-olds to test for a match with our friend Carol Martin Hicks. Carol has life threatening blood cancer that can only be cured with a bone marrow transplant. The test is simple and takes 5 minutes. A portion of the net proceeds from the event will be donated to Be The Match Foundation. |
In its latest music event Live Music Movement Foundation partners with Be The Match Foundation to use music as a healing modality to address and raise awareness of blood cancer diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma and sickle cell anemia. For many people, listening to or making music is an absolute pleasure. Consider also that music, a beloved form of entertainment for some and a passion or career for others, has a significant role in the care of cancer patients. Music therapy may accompany medical treatment to promote wellness, manage stress, alleviate pain, enhance memory, help patients communicate and express feelings, and even promote physical rehabilitation. Studies have shown that making or listening to music can even lower blood pressure and heart and breathing rates. (Cancerconnect.com) |
Are you waiting for the last possible moment to file your individual income tax return? Well, you are not alone. Approximately 25% of taxpayers file their tax returns during the final two weeks of the tax season. Another 1% or so will file their tax returns on Monday, April 15, 2013. Then there is the very large group that will request an extension to file their return by October 15, 2013.
Filing an extension is simple but remember that requesting an extension to file your return does not mean you get an extension to pay any outstanding tax liability. It simply means you avoid a financial penalty for filing the return after the due date. The penalty for underpaying your tax liability is 4.5% per month. Submit Form 4868 by April 15 to request the extension for late filing. Payment of your estimated tax liability can be submitted with the form.
Because of sequestration and the delay in the IRS completing certain tax forms, taxpayers claiming residential energy credits, depreciation of property or general business credits may receive some consideration in late payment of tax liability. Consult your CPA or tax advisor for details.
While taxes are on your mind, think tax deductions, tax deductions. Even as you contemplate filing your 2012 tax return, the time to file for tax year 2013 will be here before you know it. To keep from the need to hunt for last minute tax deductions, make a donation to Live Music Movement Foundation now. LMMF is a non-profit organization under Internal Revenue Code Sec. 501(c)(3). Gifts made are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Translation – if you itemize your deduction. If you take the standard deduction you don’t get a tax break but you will help to keep live music movin’.
Need some help to get going? Listening to music might just be the thing you need. Listen to a big band medley, a John Philip Sousa march such as the Stars and Stripes Forever. Once you get moving, listen to Sarah Vaughn to keep up the momentum. That’s what I do when I need a little push. It works every time.
Get busy and check back next Saturday, April 13, for last minute tax tips.
