Spotlight: Gerard (D’Andre Gosey)

In 2019, the Live Music Movement Foundation presented several musical events that explored the theme of ‘Live Performances in Unusual Spaces.’ These events were hosted at Notsuoh and Hoot’s Smokehouse.

Notsuoh is a space that was converted from a defunct clothing store that serves as a gathering place for artists, poets, musicians, and even chess players. The venue features many eclectic works of art and has a vintage vibe that was the perfect backdrop for LMMF’s featured artist Houston native and musician Gerard Gosey who described the venue as, “organic, intimate…there were no barriers from the stage to the audience.” Gerard’s performance kicked off the New Artist Series for LMMF. Gosey, also known as D’Andre, performed selections from his debut album ‘TY4L, Thank You for Leaving’ released in October 2019. The 11-track album was inspired by the musician’s experience with heartbreak and divorce. Despite the weighty subject matter, Gerard skillfully explored and delivered an enchanting mix of upbeat tunes that meld R&B, Pop and jazz influences. However, his remarkable talent is no surprise, as he is the grandson of local Houston blues legend, I. J. Gosey. 

​His grandfather’s influence cannot be understated. As a child, Gerard would often go to barbeques featuring the blues great and play drums with the band. That exposure and other influences such as Stevie Wonder and the Dave Matthews band laid the foundation for his excellence in music. An exceptional student in school and music despite managing a degenerative eye condition that affected his peripheral vision, Gerard didn’t let anything stop him from pursuing his passion. 

Today, he is an award-winning musician who plays several instruments such as the drums, electric bass, piano, and organ. He also writes and produces his songs and music.  As shared in the bio on his website https://www.gerardgoseymusic.com/bio, Gerard became “a band member in The Ocean of Soul at Texas Southern University, performed with a popular cover band (The City) as Quick Sticks, became a grand finalist in the 2014 Guitar Center Drum Off, featured on KTSU Radio, appeared on Travel Channel during SXSW 2016, NewsFix CW39, and Great Day Houston.” That’s just a few of his accolades and accomplishments. 

​Industrious and continually looking to express his life through his music, Gerard is working on a second album which will feature music that focuses on his visual impairment and his experience as a person of color. Blessed, grateful and walking in faith, he declares, “Music saved my life. My gift made room for me.”
